Mid Session Commentary

Equities trade with small losses

The key equity barometers traded with marginal losses in early trade. Nifty opened at 23447 and hit a high of 23495 in first half hour of trade. Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Bank and Nifty IT shares gained, while Nifty Auto and Nifty Consumer Durables shares retreated.


At 09:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, down 29.48 points to 74,734.75. The Nifty 50 index down 2.90 points to 23,428.60.


The broader market performed better than frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index edged lower by 0.17% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index added 0.09%.


The market breadth was healthy. On the BSE, 2193 shares rose and 1593 shares declined. A total of 203 shares were unchanged.


Nifty PSU Bank index climbed 1.08% to 8460. The index has posted modest losses of 3.13% in last one month and recorded robust gains of 21.65% over last one year. Canara Bank, inching higher 2.46%, led the gainers followed by Indian Bank, adding 1.62% and Bank of Baroda, up 1.60%, respectively. Out of 12 index constituents, 11 are reporting gains today.


Nifty Bank index inched up 0.31% to 56471. The index has edged lower 2.41% in last one month and edged higher by 3.84% over last one year. Canara Bank, edging up 2.46%, led the gainers followed by Bank of Baroda, gaining 1.60% and Punjab Natl.Bank, adding 1.21%, respectively. Out of 14 index constituents, 8 are reporting gains today.


Nifty Auto index edged lower by 0.76%. The index has fallen 6.64% in last one month and moved higher by 1.73% over last one year. Tube Investments, down 1.69%, led the losers followed by M & M, easing 1.33% and Ashok Leyland, losing 0.87%, respectively. Out of 15 index constituents, 13 are reporting loss today.


In NIFTY500, Tata Inv.Corpn. is the top gainer today, soaring 6.60% to Rs 659.10. The counter is down 7.52% in last one year. It recorded an average volume quantity of 16812.50 in last five sessions compared to 21261.83 over last one month.


Asian markets recorded sharp declines on Thursday. China’s Shanghai composite is slightly lower by 0.35%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng is significantly lower by 1.41%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 is trading lower by 0.61%.
